Online Submissions

The Library of Economics and Liberty (Econlib), the Online Library of Liberty (OLL), and Adam Smith Works (ASW) accept unsolicited submissions, reviewed on a rolling basis by the website editors. Law and Liberty primarily solicits submissions, but accepts occasional unsolicited pieces. Authors will be paid for pieces that are accepted for publication. Please see below for specific details from each website.

Submissions for Liberty Fund websites should be sent as email attachments or as Google docs to: submissions@libertyfund.org. Please include the name of the site you are submitting to in the subject line of your email.

All pieces should be aimed at a general educated readership. Include author name and contact information and suggested title in the email and on the attached article. Please note that final decisions regarding titles and associated imagery lie with the editorial staff. 

We do not accept multiple submissions or essays where any substantial part has been published elsewhere. Submissions are not guaranteed publication. Upon receiving the draft, we will notify you within five business days whether we accept the piece. Contributors retain the right to republish articles published with us 90 days after publication on our site(s), and we may grant other websites and journals the right to republish our content. We retain electronic rights to published pieces in perpetuity. For most pieces, we average four to six weeks from initial submission to publication.

 With certain exceptions for those working in higher education, we are regrettably unable to compensate some individuals holding certain government positions for their writing. Please inform us if you have or will in the future be initiating employment in a government position. If so, you will receive a form via Docusign where you will confirm your status (returning authors will be asked to confirm or update their employment information).

 Payments for online publications are initiated the first Monday of each month.

 Submission and acceptance for publication at Liberty Fund websites constitutes an acceptance of these terms.

Library of Economics and Liberty

(Econlib and EconLog)

EconLog accepts blogpost submissions of 500-800 words on topics of economic interest. “Economics” need not be narrowly construed. We are as interested in debates over the depiction of capitalism in popular culture as we are in debates over monetary policy. Reviews of classic or contemporary books with something to say about economics, historical explorations, and consideration of issues of the moment are all appropriate themes for the site. Before submitting a piece on current events (e.g. COVID 19)  please check the site to see if we have already published a lot of material on the topic. Your chances of acceptance and publication are much greater if your topic isn’t one we cover frequently. Please use hyperlinks rather than footnotes for these brief posts whenever possible.

Econlib annually accepts a few longer articles of 1500-2000 words. Here we seek deeper and more thorough explorations of topics similar to the ones of interest to Econlog. These longer articles should use footnotes rather than hyperlinks.

Adam Smith Works

ASW accepts 500-1000 word pieces for our “Speaking of Smith” section. All pieces should be tied to Adam Smith’s work, his inspiration, his later influence, or his context. A general piece on spontaneous order, for example, is probably more suited to Econlog, but one that considers spontaneous order in the light of Smith’s concept of the invisible hand is suited to ASW. Before submitting a piece please check the site to see if we have already published a lot of material on the topic. We do not, for example, need more material on “The Adam Smith Problem” unless it is startlingly original, but we are always interested in pieces that consider Smith’s lesser known works, or that put Wealth of Nations or Theory of Moral Sentiments into a new context. Please use hyperlinks rather than footnotes for these short pieces whenever possible.

Online Library of Liberty

The OLL accepts 500-800 word blog posts for our newest outlet, “The Reading Room.” All pieces should contain a link to material from the OLL, but should feel free to range widely from this historical starting point. Posts at The Reading Room have covered topics from the relevance of Plato in modern life, to the importance of female friendship in horror novels, to Jane Austen and imperfection. We encourage writers to make the OLL’s timeless material timely in creative and intriguing ways. Please use hyperlinks rather than footnotes for these brief posts whenever possible.

The OLL also publishes regular Liberty Matters discussions by invitation only. 

Law and Liberty

Law and Liberty publishes essays and reviews of 1000-2000 words, primarily focused on the classical liberal tradition of law and political thought and how it shapes a society of free and responsible persons. The site also covers related trends in philosophy, religion, and culture more broadly.

While Law and Liberty commissions the majority of its pieces, unsolicited submissions are occasionally accepted. Submissions can be sent to lawlibertysubmissions@libertyfund.org. Please send them as Word or Rich Text attachments with a brief summary of the piece in the body of the email.
